Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Charles Kantrow, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This is a comprehensive description of spina bifida and its impact on children and their families. The book is subdivided into the major issues affecting these children. The first edition was published in 1999.
Purpose:It is intended as an understandable, straightforward resource for families newly impacted by spina bifida. This is useful and needed by these families.
Audience:Although written for parents and family members trying to understand and cope with a new diagnosis of spina bifida, the book would also be helpful for medical students, nursing students, and therapy graduates to provide insight into the care of these challenging patients.
Features:The book covers each organ system affected by spina bifida, psychosocial impact of the initial diagnosis, ongoing care, and long term outlook. Individual chapters are dedicated to each of these areas. The sections addressing the psychosocial issues and comments by patients' families are perhaps the strongest areas.
Assessment:This is a very useful book for parents and healthcare providers interested in the complexities of spina bifida. Compared to other similar books I have seen, this one does a better job of providing insight into the psychological aspects of having a child with this impairment. The updates noted by the editor provide future insight into these children's lives.

Blackstock's Collection: The Drawings of an Artistic Savant

Author: Gregory L Blackstock

Modern life is an ever-accelerating barrage of people, buildings, vehicles, creatures, and things. How much can a curious mind take in? And what can it do with all the data? Gregory L. Blackstock, a retired Seattle pot washer, draws order out of all the chaos with a pencil, a black marker, and some crayons.
Blackstock is autistic and an artistic savant. He creates visual lists of everything from wasps to hats to emergency vehicles to noisemakers. In the spirit of the Outsider art of Henry Darger and Howard Finster, Blackstock makes art that is stirring in its profusion and detail and inspiring in its simple beauty. He has never received formal artistic training, yet his renderings clearly and beguilingly show subtle differences and similarities—enabling the viewer to see, for example, the distinctive features of a dolly varden, a Pacific Coast steelhead cutthroat, and fourteen other types of trout.
Each collection is lovingly captioned in Blackstock's unique hand with texts that reflect facts from his research as well as his passions and preferences. Blackstock's Collections contains over 100 extraordinary examples of his splendidly original taxonomy, offering a unique look inside the mind of a man making sense of life through art.
