Surviving Mental Illness or Instructions for Geriatric Patients

Surviving Mental Illness

Author: Agnes B Hatfield

In this era of revolutionary progress in the areas of science and medicine, it comes as no surprise that knowledge of the biology of mental illness and psychopharmacologic treatments has increased greatly within the past few decades. During this same time frame, however, the experiential side of mental illness has been almost completely neglected by researchers and educators. Fortunately, the trend is being reversed. Leading authorities are becoming increasingly aware that the personal experiences of people with severe and persistent mental illness can reveal the most authentic--and perhaps most helpful--information on behaviors that have long puzzled professionals in the field. This has contributed to a renewed and growing interest in learning more about the ways people experience mental illness and the process of recovery.
Leading the way in redressing the imbalance, this book examines the subjective experiences of patients with multiple diagnoses, including schizophrenia, bipolar illness, major endogenous depression, and other disorders with psychotic features and long-term disabling consequences. Numerous personal accounts are drawn from research reports, newsletters, journals, spoken reports, and observed behavior to shed light on the inner worlds of people afflicted with severe and persistent mental illness.
The volume covers a wide range of topics, starting with disturbances in the sense of self, in emotions, relationships, and behaviors, and in the ways reality is experienced by the mentally ill. In the process, some common patterns of lifetime experience are revealed even among patients with great differences in levels of functional capability and in their emotionaland rational assessment of their experience.
The final section of the book is directed toward understanding the process of acceptance, growth toward recovery, and the development of an acceptable identity and new purpose in life.
Material is presented within the conceptual framework of coping and adaptation and self theory; in addition, considerable attention is given to the patient's perception of which types of personal and professional relationships have been helpful or not helpful. As a result, the book yields important lessons--from the patients themselves--on how service providers, caregivers, and the community at large can be most helpful to those afflicted with major mental illness.
Professionals who wish to increase their capacity for empathy, develop more effective rehabilitation strategies, and advance research linking brain anomalies and patient experience will find this book illuminating. Because it illustrates in moving and powerful ways how people truly experience psychiatric disability in a society that demeans their condition and in a helping environment that only dimly understands their agony, the book will be extremely useful for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, educators, and graduate students in psychopathology and clinical skills training.

David O. Staats

This book is a manual of information and instructions for patients and their caregivers about common illness and conditions faced by older persons. The purpose is to provide physicians information sheets they can give to their patients to supplement or reinforce discussions in the doctor's office. The audience is physicians treating older patients, the older patients themselves, and their caregivers. The large type here is just right for older persons to read. This edition comes with a CD-ROM to use in reproducing and modifying information to fit each practitioner's office. The instructions for patients provided here are superficial and often do not help practitioners or caregivers assess the most salient aspects of a given illness or condition. Some of the therapeutics discussed are out of date and no longer used. Therefore, this work is of little utility.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book provides a set of patient and caregiver information sheets for conditions and treatment affecting older persons. This is an updated version of the second edition, published in 1999, and contains revisions in a number of areas and adds 35 new topics, such as PSA screening and SARS.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide office-based medical practitioners easily reproduced sheets of patient information to give to patients. This is a worthy objective; the authors cover a wide range of conditions.
Audience: Although this book is intended for office-based practitioners, it is ultimately the patients and their caregivers for whom the information is intended.
Features: There are a wide variety of conditions addressed in this book. Medicolegal issues are also presented, as are various diagnostic tests. A really nice feature of this edition is the enclosure of a CD-ROM which can be used to reproduce the pages of the book. Practitioners can modify the text to add their own particular information:this adds to the versatility of the publication. There is a final section of anatomical charts and diagrams which are very clear and easy to understand.
Assessment: The breadth of this book is admirable; the depth is not. The information presented here is, in many cases, too simple to be of the value intended. For some of these topics, e.g. dementia, the Internet has web sites that go into elaborate detail on the condition and its care that a single sheet of paper (back and front) cannot hope to equal. If this book stimulates office physicians to develop patient education materials based on this book, it will have accomplished a lot.

Depression: The Mood Disease

Author: Francis Mark Mondimor

Depression is a mood disorder that affects one in ten Americans in any given year. At one time too stigmatized to be mentioned in polite conversation, depression is now discussed frankly in the media, and advertisements for drug therapy appear everywhere. The third edition of this widely acclaimed book reflects changes in how mood disorders are thought about, and how they are treated.

Dr. Francis Mark Mondimore, author of the best-selling book Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families, here explains depression -- its causes and symptoms, and its treatment. He discusses depression in all age groups and in both sexes, as well as bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorders, and depression that accompanies illness. This edition encompasses more than a decade of new research, advances in pharmacology, and changes in public perception.

The past ten years have seen the release of new forms of the major antidepressants as well as other promising new avenues in pharmaceutical treatments. For example "atypical" or "second generation" antidepressants, such as venlafaxine and duloxetine, provide different ways of manipulating the chemical systems in the brain concerned with mood. And there have been significant advances in the use of MAO inhibitors, now available in patch form.

Dr. Mondimore reviews these and other pharmacological therapies as part of a comprehensive approach to treatment that includes psychotherapy, family and community support, and lifestyle changes. Full of information compassionately presented, this guide provides hope and help to patients and their families.

Reviewer:Raj Tummala, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This is an easy to read consumer's guide to help patients and their families understand depression and other mood disorders.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive and easy to read review of depression and other mood disorders so that the patient can better understand the illness as well as the available treatment options.
Audience:This book is targeted towards patients, their families, and loved ones who want a better understanding of mood disorders. Others may also benefit from this book, including students, residents and nurses.
Features:Since the last edition of this book, there have been tremendous advances in our understanding of the biology of mood disorders as well newer treatment options. This new edition captures these advances, allowing patients and their loved ones to easily understand them. As the author states, this is not a self-help book, but an informative review that presents scientific and clinical facts in lay language. Starting with a basic chapter on mood that explains the biology, the author covers depression with the available treatment options. Information is augmented with case vignettes that explain symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Some of the newer treatment options such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagal nerve stimulation are also covered along with to the standard therapies. Bipolar disorder is also covered in a similar format with case vignettes to help differentiate from pure depressive disorders. Information is augmented with tables. Differences in depressive disorders in the elderly, children, women, and stroke and pain patients are highlighted. Of particular interest to the patient is the chapter on causal factors. Advice is given to the patients and their families about the outcomes of depressive disorders and the need for appropriate treatment.
Assessment:This is a reader friendly book on depression and mood disorders written primarily for patients and their families. It explains scientific and clinical facts at a patient level helping the patient get a better bearing on the nature of depression.

Library Journal

In the style of Demitri and Janice Papolos's Overcoming Depression (Harper, 1987) but less detailed, this book presents a ``consumer's guide'' to mood or affective disorders. Mondimore discusses symptoms, proper diagnosis, treatment, causes, and advice to families along with the connection between mood disorders and seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual syndrome, panic disorders, and anorexia. But he omits mentioning the relationship between depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The book succeeds best as a readable, informative, comforting overview of a common illness frightening to most people. Its conciseness, however, can be dangerous; it offers no detailed list of foods incompatible with the MAO inhibitors used to treat depression, too few case studies, and little about psychotherapy. Recommended only as a supplement to the Papolos's book or similar titles.-- Janice Arenofsky, formerly with Arizona State Lib., Phoenix

Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis or Fat Flush Cookbook

Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Author: Tammi L Shlotzhauer

A trusted guide and an invaluable resource, Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis offers practical advice for the millions of people coping with this painful disease. Now thoroughly revised and expanded, in a second edition, this book brings readers up to date with the latest methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Building on their accessible explanation of the disease and its causes, the authors describe the essential components of care: medication, joint protection, physical activity, and good nutrition. They provide a wealth of new information on medications, including biologic response--modifiers, alternative and complementary approaches, and treatments for osteoporosis (which often accompanies rheumatoid arthritis), and they describe safe and effective ways to cope with pain, stiffness, and fatigue. The book helps readers understand their own emotional responses, as well as those of family and friends, and, because the disease often entails lifestyle changes, it provides practical advice for achieving as normal a life as possible.

With the latest information on medication, nutrition, and resources (online and off), this volume is a complete and comprehensive guide to the management of a difficult disease.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Ami N Mody, MD (Washington University Medical Center)
Description: This is a detailed guide for patients and families with rheumatoid arthritis describing, in simple language, what it is, its various manifestations, and what therapeutic interventions are available to treat them. The book is unique in its systematic and in-depth approach to every question. The first edition was published in 1993 and much has changed since then, especially in the field of therapeutic options, making this update quite necessary.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to formulate a well-written, readable, comprehensive guide for patients who have rheumatoid arthritis, and for those who care about them and for them. One of the most important needs of persons living with rheumatoid arthritis is education. Informed patients and family members will be better able to deal with the disease and achieve better outcomes if they are educated about the disease, its potential complications, and its treatment. These are worthy objectives and this type of book is really needed.
Audience: According to the author, the book is written for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and for those who care for them or care about them, an appropriate audience. The authors are credible authorities.
Features: The book covers in a systematic fashion and in some detail various rheumatoid arthritis signs and symptoms and therapeutic options to treat them and includes such information as exercises that can be done at home, radiographic changes in the joints, etc. The best aspect of the book is that the language is straightforward, but the complexity of the disease is not downplayed. Excellent illustrations explain various exercises. Tables are used with great effect to convey information. It is interesting to note that questions such as the role of vitamins, spas, etc., that are frequently posed by patients but are generally not a part of routine rheumatology textbooks are included here.
Assessment: Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex disease that requires constant vigilance and significant compliance on the part of the patient and caregiver for optimal response to various therapeutic interventions. This book could prove to be invaluable in the care of the rheumatoid arthritis patients by providing a bridge between the available information and its application.

Publishers Weekly

A nutritionist and the author of 20 books on health and healing, Gittleman here offers a companion cookbook to her best-selling The Fat Flush Plan. The three-phase plan calls for a strict avoidance of white rice, white flour, salt and sugar (Gittleman prefers Stevia Plus when she simply can't avoid sweetness) and the embrace of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The 200-plus recipes include dishes for each of the plan's phases (which will mean nothing to readers who don't own the original volume), from breakfasts to snacks to desserts. While the fat flush philosophy seems commonsensical, the plan itself is rigid, if not downright draconian, and the puritanical zeal with which Gittleman expounds upon fat-flushing may begin to grate on any but the truest converts. Half a grapefruit, broiled with 1 teaspoon of honey, is a "special occasions" snack, flaxseeds are everywhere and Fragrant Fat Flush Meatballs use cauliflower in place of breadcrumbs: for a foodie, this is some dispiriting stuff. Nevertheless, while the utter lack of salt does her recipes some disservice (in Phase 3 recipes, there is occasional permission for "salt to taste"), Gittleman's reliance on fresh herbs, which she cites for various healing powers, wholesome ingredients and easy cooking techniques makes her cookbook worth a look for those serious about making big diet changes. Blessed Health offers African-American women the medical information and inspirational motivation they need to achieve total health—a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

As a result, they are suffering with, and dying from, manageable illnesses such as heart disease, obesity, cancer, and diabetes more than any other group in the United States.

It doesn't have to be that way. Don't wait until a health emergency happens before turning to your faith and your physician. You can achieve optimal health by arming yourself with medical knowledge and a strong spiritual base. The Beginner's Guide to Yoga

Author: Liz Lark

This attractive book’s title notwithstanding, The Beginner’s Guide to Yoga can also be used profitably by intermediate practitioners and by those seeking a brush-up yoga course after being away from it for a lengthy period. The author presents illustrated instructions on achieving asanas (positions), and provides charts to help readers measure their progress on a week-by-week basis. He also gives guidelines for making adjustments in diet and lifestyle, which are necessary for the successful practice of yoga. Central to this book is a description of the full range of asanas, starting with positions for the beginner and progressing through intermediate to advanced stages. The author also discusses meditation, stressing that yoga without meditation is not really yoga. His final chapters touch on the philosophy of yoga in daily life and yoga’s ultimate purpose, which is to lead its practitioner toward transcendence and unity with the cosmic consciousness. More than 150 color photos.

Claire Rosser - KLIATT

This is a beautifully designed book, showing various positions clearly and describing the history and practice of yoga. It is hard to imagine a beginner just getting this book and starting to practice yoga daily by looking at the pictures; almost surely, a beginner should start with a teacher and a class. At that point, however, this book could be helpful. With some familiarity with yoga by observing and copying the movements of a teacher, a beginner could then use this book to understand the principles of yoga, meditation, and specific positions more thoroughly, and to refer to the illustrations when attempting yoga alone. Doing Things or Understanding and Treating Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Doing Things: A Guide to Programming Activities for Persons with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders

Author: Jitka M Zgola

Doing Things shows how to provide a positive environment for persons with Alzheimer's disease by offering opportunities for social interaction and constructive, enjoyable activities. Zgola outlines the ways in which a patient's functional impairment can be assessed; the strengths, weaknesses, and needs most commonly encountered among persons with Alzheimer's disease; and ways activities can be tailored to accommodate them. She offers step-by-step instructions for selecting and presenting appropriate activities and includes cooking and crafts projects, a sample exercise routine, and a sample daily schedule. The techniques she describes are designed to promote a sense of security and self-esteem, by avoiding possible sources of confusion or confrontation.

Based on the highly successful program developed at one day-care facility for persons with dementia, Doing Things offers an invaluable guide for professionals and volunteers supervising activities at day-care centers and extended-care facilities -- as well as for individuals who are caring for patients at home. Throughout, Zgola's emphasis is on treating persons who have Alzheimer's disease with empathy, courtesy, and dignity.

Understanding and Treating Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Author: Brian B Doyl

An estimated seven million American adults have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder provides accurate, timely information about the nature and treatment of this disorder. Written in a collegial style, this resource combines evidence-based material with clinical experience to address problems in diagnosing and treating adults with ADHD. Dr. Doyle shows how diagnostic and treatment methods in children with ADHD also apply to affected adults. He examines the role of medications, including new agents that expand the range of therapeutic choices.

Understanding the evolution of the concept and treatment of ADHD in children illuminates current thinking about the disorder in adults. Dr. Doyle presents guidelines for establishing a valid diagnosis, including clinical interviews and standardized rating scales. He covers genetic and biochemical bases of the disorder. He also addresses the special challenges of forming a therapeutic alliance& mdash;working with "coach" caregivers; cultural, ethnic, and racial issues; legal considerations; and countertransference issues.

He explores a range of options for treating adult ADHD:

• Detailed facts about using medication, with specific information on both CNS stimulants and nonstimulant medications. He also discusses highly touted medications that are actually ineffective.

• Full coverage of comprehensive treatment approaches beyond medication& mdash;focusing on cognitive behavioral therapies, among others. He uses a detailed clinical example drawn from several patients to illustrate issues involved in treating ADHD adultsover time.

• Complete review of conditions that may require treatment before ADHD can be addressed. Many ADHD adults struggle with comorbid anxiety, affective disorders, and substance abuse. Dr. Doyle explains how overlooked ADHD can complicate the treatment of other disorders. He provides strategies for the patient with medication-resistant or treatment-refractory ADHD.

The book provides in-depth discussion of such issues as the impact of ADHD in the workplace, including steps for maximizing job satisfaction; special considerations related to women; and the effect of ADHD on families. A useful appendix helps readers and patients find reliable information about ADHD on the Internet, allowing clinicians to develop an "e-prescription" to supplement medication and other interventions.

Dr. Doyle advocates the promise of enhanced life prospects for adults with ADHD that effective treatment provides. Besides addressing the special challenges of ADHD adults, Dr. Doyle conveys the rewards of working with patients who prove resourceful, creative, and persistent.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Regina Lopez, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book provides a practical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in adults and discusses the challenges clinicians encounter when treating this patient population.
Purpose: According to the author, the purpose is to provide accurate, timely information about the nature of ADHD and its treatment in adults. These objectives are worthy given the fact that a majority of the literature on ADHD is focused on children and adolescents. The author meets his objectives.
Audience: Clinicians who treat ADHD in either adults or children and adolescents would be the audience for this book. The author is a clinical professor of psychiatry and of family and community medicine at Georgetown University Medical School.
Features: The book primarily covers the diagnostic and treatment difficulties of adult ADHD. Included is a comprehensive overview of the biology of ADHD. The book also addresses the special considerations such as psychiatric comorbidities, treatment-refractory ADHD, and issues related to women and the family. The neuroanatomic and functional neuroimaging studies are covered well. The book is easy to read and understand. A unique appendix contains Internet resources and quality ratings of these web sites. The clinical examples, in my opinion, seem unnecessary. They do not contribute much to the content. Also, there are few tables and figures. Figures would better illustrate material in the biology chapter. Finally, the psychopharmacology is not thorough enough for practicing psychiatrists.
Assessment: The book is good as aconcise, practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of adults with ADHD. It is useful in helping distinguish ADHD in adults versus children and adolescents, and it gets readers to consider special challenges in this patient population.

    Publishers Weekly

The "secrets" revealed in this friendly volume won't surprise many readers: losing weight requires burning more calories and consuming fewer. But given that the obesity epidemic is getting, well, bigger, the helpful tips and ideas are needed, even if they aren't particularly newsworthy. Sansone, creator of the Walk Away the Pounds book and video series, begins by explaining healthy dieting habits, highlighting typical stumbling blocks and outlining her PERFECT support system (an acronym for plan, educate, repeat, flex, exercise, celebrate and transform) that details steps she believes are key to straightforward weight loss. Then she introduces a six-week plan, complete with workbook pages for each day, designed to eradicate bad habits and promote good ones. She also includes dozens of reasonably tempting recipes (e.g., Apricot Lentil Stew, Chicken Mole, and Oatmeal-Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies) to make in conjunction with the plan. Except for the depressing suggestion that "people do best if they spend most of their exercise time on indoor walking... walking in place... in complete privacy," this is an uplifting diet guide that can help anyone currently in the nonactive population segment-as long as they stick to it. Reconstructing Illness: Studies in Pathography

    Author: Anne Hunsaker Hunsaker Hawkins

Serious illness and mortality, those most universal, unavoidable, and frightening of human experiences, are the focus of this pioneering study, which has been hailed as a telling and provocative commentary on our times. As modern medicine has become more scientific and dispassionate, a new literary genre as emerged: pathography, the personal narrative concerning illness, treatment and sometimes death. Hawkins's sensitive reading of numerous pathographies highlights the assumptions, attitudes, and myths that people bring to the medical encounter. One factor emerges again and again in these "case studies": the tendency in contemporary medical practice to focus primarily not on the needs of the individual who is sick but on the condition that we call disease. Recommended for medical practitioners, the clergy, caregivers, students of popular culture, and the general reader, Reconstructing Illness demonstrates that "only when we hear both the doctor's and the patient's voice will we have a medicine that is truly human."

    Publishers Weekly

Hawkins, an associate professor of humanities at Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine, argues convincingly that today's ``pathographies,'' or first-person written accounts of experiences with disease, are replacing the stories of religious conversion that were popular in earlier eras. She posits that each of these works chooses one of three central themes to make sense out of impending death. One theme views death and illness as a battle or journey to be undertaken; a second is framed as a quest for ``the good death''; the third posits the belief that patients can take responsibility for their own recovery. Sources such as Paul Monette's Borrowed Time and Gilda Radner's comic autobiography back up these theories, but sometimes Hawkins flits from one work to the next without lending the reader any complex understanding of them. Furthermore, the organization of the three types of pathography into separate chapters does not allow for the possibility that some books fall into more than one category. However, the observations about contemporary culture and our feelings about death and illness are plausible and intriguing, and the writing is clear. (June)

    Booknews

Studies the myths, attitudes, and assumptions that inform the way we deal with illness. Begins with an analysis of a popular literary genre, recent biographies and autobiographies that describe experiences of illness, and evolves into a discussion of issues in contemporary medical practice. This second edition contains a new final chapter surveying pathographies that have appeared since the first edition (1992), and suggesting two additional illness myths. Alzheimer Disease Sourcebook

    Author: Karen Bellenir

Omnigraphics' Health Reference Series is designed for the general reader seeking guidance on how to avoid serious illness by following preventive lifestyles and recognizing early warning signs. It also supports the layperson who has received a diagnosis of a serious disease or disorder as well as the family member or nonprofessional caregiver who must learn to care and to cope with the illness. Each volume in the series deals comprehensively with a particular area of medical concern and contains material found in publications issued by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies and associations. Nowhere else can general readers find this information conveniently collected, coordinated, and indexed in book form.

According to recent statistics Alzheimer disease affects more than 5 million Americans. Medical researchers do not fully understand what causes it, and there is no cure. The risk for developing Alzheimer disease increases as a person ages. About five percent of men and women between the ages of 65 and 74 have Alzheimer disease, and nearly half of those 85 and older may have it. Because the U.S. population as a whole is aging, the estimated number of affected people is expected to grow dramatically. By the year 2050, as many as 14 million people may be victims-unless medical researchers can find a means of prevention or a cure.

Alzheimer Disease Sourcebook, Fourth Edition provides updated information about Alzheimer disease and other types of dementia, including multi-infarct dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Binswanger disease, Huntington disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It explains recent advances made in understanding thecauses of dementing disorders, improvements made in diagnostic procedures, and discoveries that have helped identify potential treatments. For people newly diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, it offers information about coping with mental changes and long-term planning. For caregivers, it offers suggestions about many practical aspects of daily life, including planning activities, managing behavior problems, and helping people with dementia maintain their skills. A glossary and directories of resources provide additional help and information.

Theres Always Help Theres Always Hope or Unraveling The Add Adhd Fiasco

There's Always Help: There's Always Hope: An Award-Winning Psychiatrist Shows You How to Heal Your Body, Mind, and Spirit

    Author: Eve A Wood

Although surrounded by options for medical, psychological, and spiritual support, we lack a unified model of healing that can truly guide us in our journey to wellness. Thus we remain lost, suffering and confused. This book offers us hope. In it, Dr. Eve A. Wood presents an integrative approach to healing that combines traditional psychiatric practices and universal spiritual principles. By sharing her patients’ poignant, captivating, and miraculous tales of recovery to demonstrate crucial lessons, Dr. Wood demystifies the therapeutic process. She provides us with the concepts, tools, and resources we need to craft our own unique paths to personal fulfillment, joy, and health. With extraordinary reverence and compassion for the human spirit, Dr. Wood demonstrates that with time, patience, willingness, and hope, we can work through even the most impossible challenges in order to achieve emotional health and inner peace. Believing that each of us has a tale that we’re meant to live and share, Dr. Wood shows us how to find and live our own stories. Whether you suffer from a diagnosable condition, or simply want to better understand yourself, Harnessing Your Healing Potential will help you find your path to a better future.

    Library Journal

A patient can heal psychologically if he or she really wants to by dealing first with bodily symptoms, then mental/emotional aspects, and then spiritual concepts and then by integrating all three. Psychologist Wood (medicine, Univ. of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine) uses this theme to develop an approach for people who think they might have primary psychiatric conditions and don't know where to turn, though those with longstanding problems who have had no relief from their symptoms may also find this book useful. Theorizing that people can heal by seeing parts of themselves through others' stories, Wood shares tales from patients with multiple-personality, panic, obsessive-compulsive, and attention-deficit disorders. A more interesting approach would have been to track these same patients through the four-step process she advocates. Although too cerebral to effect much in the way of real spiritual change, the book is adequate as a source of pointers on gaining better mental functioning and/or emotional survival. For example, a "Feelings Vocabulary" helps distinguish "disorder feelings" from "core feelings" and is a good basic diagnostic tool. Recommended for psychology collections in larger public libraries.-Lisa Liquori, MLS, Syracuse, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Of Course Youre Angry or Reiki para principiantes

Of Course You're Angry: A Family Guide Dealing with the Emotions of Substance Abuse

    Author: Garth M Rosellini

Though we may not like to admit it, all of us get angry. At times we feel irked, exasperated, irritated, resentful, even enraged. Anger is a normal and healthy human emotion; learning to acknowledge and express it appropriately, however, especially for those in early recovery, is another story.

First published in 1985, this timely revision of the best-selling Hazelden title on the nature and resolution of anger shows us how to make anger work in a positive and effective way that can ease, rather than exacerbate, the problems and challenges of early recovery.

In a friendly, nonconfrontive manner, Of Course You're Angry guides readers to discover the source of their anger and the forms it takes -- such as violence, depression, resentment, and manipulation. Authors Gayle Rosellini and Mark Worden continue by exploring various anger styles, and then provide clear, sensible, and practical guidelines for expressing anger, conquering "common conceits," and "wrangling with rancor. " Their real-life examples and down-to-earth advice for dealing with anger without fear or guilt -- and without hurting oneself or others -- offers addicts as well as their family members and friends a way passed one of the most dangerous pitfalls of early recovery.
