Healing the Hidden Self or Balanced Healing

Healing the Hidden Self

Author: Barbara Shlemon Ryan

Focusing on healing for the seven major stages of human development-Prenatal, Birth, Infancy, Childhood, Adolescence, Early Adulthood, and Seasoned Citizens-Barbara Shlemon Ryan describes how long-lasting hurt can occur in one or more stages of life, and how this hurt can manifest itself in another stage.

With a new preface, a new epilogue, and chapters focusing on each stage of development, Ryan offers examples of the types of problems encountered in each stage. A prayer at the end of each chapter helps initiate the healing process. Healing the Hidden Self emphasizes the importance of inner healing for all who seek a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and with others. Its practical, how-to approach makes it an invaluable resource.

After more than 100,000 copies sold, this revised edition updates the 1982 original using new examples, references, and insights gained through Barbara Shlemon Ryan's Beloved Ministry.

Balanced Healing: Combining Modern Medicine with Safe & Effective Alternative

Author: Larry H Altshuler

Balanced Healing arms readers with ailment-specific information that will help them make intelligent choices for a bias-free, balanced approach to health and healing.

Library Journal

Altshuler, a board-certified physician, incorporated alternative medicine treatments into his practice 25 years ago and received advanced training in several alternative therapies. His book is an attempt to present a balanced overview of the best of conventional and alternative healing therapies. After weighing the pros and cons of modern medicine vs. integrative medicine, the author shows how the two medical styles can be combined to treat 100 common ailments. The entries in this A-to-Z section include common symptoms, recommendations, and treatment plans. Altshuler cautions readers to remember that patients are different and that one therapy combination may not work for all. He also advises readers to work closely with a medical professional when using combined therapies. Two appendixes provide a list of alternative methods and procedures and alternative medicine products. Altshuler's experience with both types of therapies and his balanced approach make this book a valuable addition to any consumer health library or consumer health collection.-Marge Kars, Bronson Methodist Hosp. Caregiving Zone or Bipolar Disorders A Guide to Helping Children Adolescents

Caregiving Zone

Author: Peggy Flynn

Coping with illness and dying is a challenge. How do we allocate resources? What are the rights and responsibilities of the sick and those tending them? Can the burdens of caregiving be blessings in disguise?

In The Caregiving Zone, Peggy Flynn, founder and director of The Good Death Institute, describes the everyday challenges of caregiving. She encourages us to think about illness and death as incontrovertible realities that can be anticipated and made less burdensome for everyone involved. "Death is hard, but it doesn't have to be hideous."

Using personal stories and reflections, Ms. Flynn illuminates life "in the Zone" with understanding and empathy. She suggests that individuals and families "take charge of the inevitable" by confronting their fears and preparing for illness and death before events overtake them. She envisions "a program designed for families or groups of friends who want to be proactive about the inevitable."

The Caregiving Zone illustrates how both giving and receiving care can provide opportunities and rewards in addition to burdens. Sometimes, with insight, information and compassion, the benefits can outweigh the costs.

Bipolar Disorders A Guide to Helping Children & Adolescents

Author: Mitzi Waltz

Until recently, bipolar disorders were almost never diagnosed in children and rarely recognized in adolescents, even though between 20 and 40 percent of the two million or more adults diagnosed with bipolar disorders in the United States experienced the onset of illness in their teen years or before. Psychiatrists now recognize that manic depression has frequently been misdiagnosed as ADHD (or oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, or depression). According to recent data, 23 percent of children currently diagnosed with ADHD will evenutally be diagnosed as having a bipolar disorder. As many as a million children in the US alone may have childhood-onset bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorders are different in children than in adults. There are some diagnostic criteria unique to children. Some reckless behavior is limited by being a child and being under adult control. Families and communities pay a heavy toll when this disorder is not recognized and treated. Suicide is a possible outcome, as are school failure, limited job prospects, legal difficulties, and hospitalizations. Understanding and recognizing the differences in the illness for children and adolescents is key for concerned parents and professionals.

Bipolar Disorders covers the range of topics that parents need to know about in order to help their children:

  • Description of the range of bipolar disorders
  • Diagnostic criteria, current and proposed, including comparisons to common misdiagnoses
  • Family life with bipolar disorders, including recognizing and preventing mood swings, safety, and support
  • Medications, with special attention to the physiology and responses of children and adolescents
  • Therapeutic interventions in various "talk therapies"
  • Other interventions, such as improving sleep patterns, preventing seasonal mood swings, diet, and supplements
  • Insurance issues
  • school, including special education system and 504 Plans or EIPs

As author Mitzi Waltz notes, "With early intervention, the possibilities for these kids are limitless."

Delmars Integrative Herb Guide for Nurses or Tylers Honest Herbal

Delmar's Integrative Herb Guide for Nurses

Author: Martha Libster

Delmar's Integrative Herb Guide for Nurses is the first book to present the ways nurses can successfully integrate herbs into a caring practice alongside more conventional biomedical therapies. Herbs were once a major source of the remedies used in healing. The development of synthetic drugs during the twentieth century largely replaced the use of herbal therapies in nursing practice. This trend is beginning to change again, however, as nurses now encounter patients turned health care consumers who actively seek alternatives to biomedicine, such as herbal therapies. Today's nurse is also becoming more aware of a larger demographic group of patients who continue to use generations-old, plant-based remedies. The guide begins with an introduction to medicinal plants and includes a brief overview of botany, safe use information, and suggestions on how to use the guide in practice. The main body of the guide includes twelve chapters profiling fifty-eight common herbs. Each chapter contains practical information on how to integrate plant-based therapies into patient care. The guide concludes by showing nurses ways they can learn more about the use of plant therapies in holistic practice and includes a sample curriculum for a thirty-two week introductory course on the integrative use of plant therapies.

Each write-up includes descriptive information on the source of the plant, its traditional uses, and an evaluation of the relevant and current literature which helps support or disprove intended uses of the plant. This new edition of Tyler's classic The Honest Herbal provides you with the following features not found in any of the previous editions: research and information about cat's claw, celery, garcinia, grape seed, kava, pygeum, and wild yam; what you need to know about the latest clinical trials on many bestselling herbs, including black cohosh, echinacea, garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, St. John's wort, and saw palmetto; and hundreds of new, supporting references from scientific studies on herbs and other dietary supplements.

Library Journal

Originally published as The Honest Herbal in 1982, Tyler's Honest Herbal is still the classic herbal guide for consumers and health practitioners alike, fully referenced with the latest peer-reviewed scientific data. As in previous editions, great emphasis is placed on safety concerns when taking herbs. Tyler's Herbs of Choice, a new edition of the 1994 Herbs of Choice, discusses the therapeutic application of herbal remedies for over 100 health problems. Objective and scientifically sound, it augments Tyler's Honest Herbal, although the titles do not need to be bought together. An added bonus is the useful chapter on "Herbal Regulations," as reliable and understandable information on this topic is hard to find. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

"Researchers, get busy!" and "caveat emptor" are the messages of this iteration (last, 1993; first, 1982) by herbalists Tyler (pharmacognosy, Purdue U.) and Foster, as they cull herbs' healing virtues from the hype. Alphabetical entries from alfalfa to yucca provide: a brief description, proper nomenclature, plant from which derived, comments on usage, accessible discussion of the chemistry/pharmacology of its active components, evaluation of probable utility, and references. A 16-page summary chart may alone be worth the price. No illustrations, though. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Medieval Herbals or Oasis

Medieval Herbals: The Illustrative Traditions

Author: Minta Collins

Medieval Herbals: The Illustrative Traditions is a new, wide-ranging and generously illustrated study of manuscript herbals produced between 600 - 1450. The book examines the two principal herbal traditions of Classical descent: the Dioscorides manuscripts in Greek, Arabic, and Latin and the Latin Herbarius of Apulcius Platonicus. It shows how, from 1300, the illustrations of the de herbis Traetatus treatises, the first of which was British Library, MS. Egerton 747, showed a new observation of nature, paving the way in the fifteenth century for French Livres des Simples and the magnificent plant paintings of later Italian Herbals. Medieval Herbals provides one of the few syntheses in English of existing research on the subject and also addresses issues of dating, location, production and ownership of the individual codices. Minta Collins demonstrates how many herbals were not only codices for medical scholars but expensively illustrated books for bibliophiles, of equal interest to students of manuscripts, to historians of medicine and botany, and to art historians.

Naked Weightlifting or Sham

Naked Weightlifting: The Bare Essentials of Weight-Training

Author: Stephanie Jones

Naked Weightlifting is NOT about lifting weights without clothing (but I bet you took a second look). The definition of naked is "without extra or embellishment" while the definition of weightlifting is "the lifting of heavy weights as an exercise in a prescribed manner." Naked Weightlifting is another way of saying weightlifting made simple or without an overload of information. Pictures speak a thousand words especially when instructing individuals on how "to do" something like weightlifting.

The author put herself in the shoes of individuals who have never lifted weights before to those who have many years of experience weight training. The book is designed to show pictures of start and finish positions of over 100 weightlifting exercises that cover all body parts from abdominals to triceps (arms) accompanied with a basic description of how to execute those exercises. There are no opinions, nutritional advice or workout programs in this book, only how to do them properly and a spreadsheet for individuals to log their progress as a workbook.

Stephanie Jones was born and raised in Southern California where she was introduced to weightlifting by her sister and learned from one of Rachael McLish's bodybuilding books. She has over 15 years of weightlifting experience and is also a certified personal weight trainer. She has trained with individuals such as Ross Bonfiglio who held the Mr. Venture title in Ventura California in the 80's to professional bodyguards of celebrities like Sylvester Stallone. She has appeared several times with Peter Nielsen of Peter Principles which airs on the local NBC Detroit stations. She has never competed in any type of fitness competition as shebelieves the only person to compete with is herself. To continually drive for self improvement is the constant key to success.

Stephanie is also a mother of a 3 year old daughter who already has a set of 3lb dumbbells.

Sham: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless

Author: Steve Salerno

Self-help: To millions of Americans it seems like a godsend. To many others it seems like a joke. But as investigative reporter Steve Salerno reveals in this groundbreaking book, it’s neither—in fact it’s much worse than a joke. Going deep inside the Self-Help and Actualization Movement (fittingly, the words form the acronym SHAM), Salerno offers the first serious exposé of this multibillion-dollar industry and the real damage it is doing—not just to its paying customers, but to all of American society.
Based on the author’s extensive reporting—and the inside look at the industry he got while working at a leading “lifestyle” publisher—SHAM shows how thinly credentialed “experts” now dispense advice on everything from mental health to relationships to diet to personal finance to business strategy. Americans spend upward of $8 billion every year on self-help programs and products. And those staggering financial costs are actually the least of our worries.
SHAM demonstrates how the self-help movement’s core philosophies have infected virtually every aspect of American life—the home, the workplace, the schools, and more. And Salerno exposes the downside of being uplifted, showing how the “empowering” message that dominates self-help today proves just as damaging as the blame-shifting rhetoric of self-help’s “Recovery” movement.
SHAM also reveals:
• How self-help gurus conduct extensive market research to reach the same customers over and over—without ever helping them
• The inside story on the most notoriousgurus—from Dr. Phil to Dr. Laura, from Tony Robbins to John Gray
• How your company might be wasting money on motivational speakers, “executive coaches,” and other quick fixes that often hurt quality, productivity, and morale
• How the Recovery movement has eradicated notions of personal responsibility by labeling just about anything—from drug abuse to “sex addiction” to shoplifting—a dysfunction or disease
• How Americans blindly accept that twelve-step programs offer the only hope of treating addiction, when in fact these programs can do more harm than good
• How the self-help movement inspired the disastrous emphasis on self-esteem in our schools
• How self-help rhetoric has pushed people away from proven medical treatments by persuading them that they can cure themselves through sheer application of will
As Salerno shows, to describe self-help as a waste of time and money vastly understates its collateral damage. And with SHAM, the self-help industry has finally been called to account for the damage it has done.

You! Yes, you! Are you addicted to self-help books? Do you require "empowerment" to reverse your "victimhood"? If so, relax-you're far from alone. The Self-Help and Actualization Movement (the titular SHAM) is, according to Salerno, an $8-billion-a-year industry that depends on legions of repeat customers. Salerno presents a carefully researched-and devastating-expos on SHAM's predatory and fraudulent practices and its corrosive effects on society. As former editor of Men's Health magazine's books program, Salerno knows the terrain from the inside. With judicious delight, he exposes the grandiloquent bluster and blithe hypocrisy of Dr. Phil (who, psychologists say, shames rather than helps his guests) and Dr. Laura (the preacher of family values who didn't know when her own mother was murdered), among many others. He cites examples of junk science, such as Tony Robbins's talk of "the energy frequency of foods," and charges that untested alternative medicine draws people away from proven medical treatments. In addition to detailing the raw facts, Salerno excels at pinpointing the self-abnegating strategy the self-help industry employs: namely, tearing you down in the name of building you up. And the positivity yields questionable results in any case. The self-help industry should not be dismissed as "silly but benign," says Salerno, and he documents how it has undermined psychology, education and health care in this blistering critique. Library Journal

Salerno, a freelance feature writer, essayist, and investigative reporter whose work has been featured in Harper's, the New York Times Magazine, and the Washington Post, minces no words in this evisceration of the self-help and actualization movement (SHAM). He takes on contemporary gurus like Dr. Phil McGraw, Tony Robbins, John Gray, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger-anyone, in fact, who dispenses popular advice or advocates psychological or alternative medical self-help (even 12-step programs take a hit). Ultimately, Salerno argues that SHAM, a multibillion-dollar industry, has fostered a culture of victimization that discourages people from taking responsibility for their lives, thereby undermining the character of our nation. This conclusion would have been much more persuasive if he had dispensed with the vitriol. Wendy Kaminer's I'm Dysfunctional, You're Dysfunctional: The Recovery Movement and Other Self-Help Fashions is a more effective critique; Salerno's book is recommended only for large public libraries.-Lynne F. Tattoo Road Trip Two Weeks in Samoa or Cancer Combat

Tattoo Road Trip Two Weeks in Samoa

Author: Bob Baxter

A witty yet informative text, with lots of travel tips and pictures, focuses on the art of the tattoo that the authors found in this Pacific Island paradise. Join the adventure as these two take to the road at the very birthplace of Polynesian tattooing, beautiful Samoa. Armed with laptop and camera, Baxter and Clark documented their two-week odyssey from Apia to Saleapaga, and from thatched-roofed huts to the legendary mansion of Robert Louis Stevenson. The book displays this unspoiled home of turquoise reefs, volcanic beaches, misty green waterfalls, and vermilion sunsets, where hand-tapped tribal tattoos are still a normal form of body art and ritual. You will learn the local customs, meet legendary artists, and visit secluded beaches, including the secret coronation ceremony at Faleasela. White-knuckle surprises await you as Baxter and Clark take the back roads, eat fruit right off the tree, slog through rain forests, wade into coral-strewn tide pools, and suck up gallons of beer because it's not a good idea to drink the water. You will even learn to tie a lavalava so it won't fall off in the crosswalk! This entertaining trip to a jewel of the Pacific will confirm the belief that Polynesian life has it right, right down to the tattoos!

Library Journal

For newly diagnosed cancer patients, one of the most important things to realize is the wide range of options available for fighting this disease. Unlike other consumer health titles, this work does not endorse or recommend specific doctors, treatment plans, or institutions; rather, it presents practical advice and information in the form of anecdotes from cancer survivors. Taking a specific and detailed approach to their subject, the authors, who themselves have had cancer, emphasize positive thinking and the importance of building a team of friends and family members to assist patients in their personal war. Their message is clear: patients can emerge from this disease stronger and wiser, but it takes time, organization, and optimism. Organized into four sections, chapters discuss such topics as the first diagnosis, breaking the news to others, coping with fear, and rebuilding one's life after remission. The stories collected here will inspire those readers feeling isolated and wanting to know how others handled this situation. Recommended for consumer health collections.Janet M. Colon and Rectal Cancer or My Yoga Journal

Colon and Rectal Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Families

Author: Lorraine Johnston

The fourth most common cancer, colon and rectal cancer is diagnosed in 130,000 new cases in the U.S. each year. As with many other cancers, the treatment environment is evolving. As a patient (or the family researcher) you need up-to-date and in-depth information to participate wisely in treatment decisions.

Colon & Rectal Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients & Families includes:

  • Characteristics of colon cancer, staging, suspected causes, and factors in prognoses
  • Current treatment options
  • Clinical trials and promising future treatments
  • Coping with medical tests, symptoms, and treatments
  • Recognizing and minimizing the impact of treatment on sexual function, libido, and fertility
  • Caring for and adjusting to an ostomy, whether temporary or permanent
  • Emotional responses to diagnosis, treatment, remission, and all other aspects of dealing with the condition. Stories from those living with colon cancer are included.

Author Lorraine Johnston, with her background in life sciences, emphasizes using knowledge to dispel fear. Those who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily life, and tools to be a strong advocate for themselves or a family member.

Library Journal

In her latest guide, medical writer Johnston takes a sweeping look at the clinical, financial, social, and research aspects of colon and rectal cancer. Unfortunately, owing to the vast amount of information amassed here, basic definitions and crucial explanations often lack clarity. Part of the problem is that the book lacks a streamlined approach to presenting data; chapters encompass far too many topics grouped under one broad subject. For example, "Modes of Treatment" lumps together the surgical, chemical, biological, radiological and stage/treatment fundamentals for both rectal and colon cancer. The result is a profusion of technical terms that are inadequately explained and poorly organized. Finally, as in her previous book, Non-Hodgkins Lymphomas: Making Sense of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Options (LJ 5/1/99), Johnston provides ineffective Medline search strategies that yield over 1000 citations--which is sure to overwhelm and frustrate a novice (or sick) searcher. A better alternative would be the American Cancer Society: Colorectal Cancer (Random, 1999) by Bernard Levin. Not recommended.--Gail Hendler, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Ctr., New York Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Author's comments on Library Journal's review of Colon and Rectal Cancer: a Comprehensive Guide for Patients & Families
It is unfortunate that Ms. Hendler of Library Journal found parts of our book confusing, as many colorectal cancer experts, patients, and survivors reviewed our book prior to publication and had the final word on how it was written. Our book contains as-we-go explanations and a glossary.

Organ Transplants or Spacious Body

Organ Transplants: Making the Most of Your Gift of Life

Author: Robert Finn

Over 64,000 people in the US are living in limbo, awaiting an organ transplant.

The good news about organ transplants is that they are becoming fairly routine surgical procedures. The even better news is that they do work miracles. People who have been in ill health for years often describe a feeling of being reborn after a transplant.

However, those families who have been told that a loved one needs a transplant to live are thrust into a strange land. Patients and families worry that no organ will be available to them. They may fear the surgery or what living with someone else's organ will feel like. They may have only a foggy idea of what staying with an immunosuppressive therapy regime after the operation will entail.

Organ Transplants: Making the Most of Your Gift of Life describes:

  • Deciding whether to have a transplant and choosing a transplant team
  • The importance of the screening interview
  • What factors go into determining a match, and what to do while waiting
  • Detailed information on heart and lung, liver, kidney and pancreas, and other transplants
  • Anti-rejection drugs and living with a transplant
  • Emotional responses and support
  • Specific situations such as living donors, transplants in children, meeting the donor family, etc.

Robert Finn, medical and scientific journalist and author, has interviewed dozens of patients, family members, medical caregivers, and transplant activists to present your family with the latest facts about transplantation--as well as the stories behind those facts.

Child Obesity: A Parent's Guide to a Fit, Trim, and Happy Child

Author: Goutham Rao

Is your child overweight? Do you worry about the effects of excess weight on the health and self-esteem of your family's youngest and most vulnerable members? If so, you're not alone. Weight problems among children have now reached epidemic proportions. And it's no wonder. High-calorie fast foods and soft drinks are everywhere, and they are heavily promoted in many of the 40,000 television commercials that kids watch every year.

A nationally recognized expert on child obesity, Dr. Goutham Rao uses the latest and best medical evidence available to show you how to help your child avoid or overcome this prevalent and dangerous health problem.

In the first part of his easy-to-read and informative book, Dr. Rao gives you the knowledge you need to understand the scope of the problem. He identifies the five principal culprits for obesity among children: soft drinks ("liquid candy"); fast food; television and video games; the inactivity of youngsters both at school and at play; and the changing patterns of family behavior, which have led to irregular meal times and the over-consumption of "convenience" foods.

In the second half of the book, Dr. Rao carefully explains a rational approach to helping your child achieve or maintain a healthy weight, including the science of changing people's behavior. You will also find several typical stories of overweight children, ranging from a heavy thirteen-month infant boy to a sixteen-year-old obese and self-conscious girl. With the help of their parents these children managed to achieve a healthy weight by following simple, practical advice without resorting to gimmicks or "miracle cures."

Dr. Rao makes it clear that despite all the talk about "low-carb" and other fad diets, there are no magic bullets for treating childhood obesity. But the good news is that armed with the right information and recommendations, parents can reverse this dangerous trend and succeed in helping their children become fit, trim, and happy.

100 Simple Secrets of Healthy People: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use it

Author: David Niven

The Simple Science of a Healthy Life

From fitness to diets to emotional health and longevity, what do people who feel and look healthy do differently than those who are overtired, depressed, or out of shape? Every day we face an avalanche of studies and statistics that tell us what we should or shouldn't eat, how long we need to exercise, or how to protect ourselves from secondhand smoke and the harmful rays from the sun. Not only are these studies often contradictory, but the actual scientific information is usually inaccessible.

Moving beyond the myths and misinformation, the advice in these pages is not based on one person's opinions or one expert's study. For the first time the research available on the health of average Americans has been distilled into one hundred essential ways that we can become healthier and happier. Each of the core findings is accompanied by a real life example showing these results in action.

  • Eat more often. Oxford University researchers found that people who ate five or six times a day had a 5 percent lower total cholesterol than average and were 45 percent more likely to be able to sustain their target weight than people who ate once or twice a day.

  • Who says caffeine is bad for you? The majority of scientific evidence shows that, for a healthy adult, moderate quantities of caffeine (about three cups of coffee per day) pose no significant health risks.

  • Home sweet home. People who described their home lives as satisfying were 24 percent more likely to live beyond normal life expectancy, according to a UCLA study.
